Things You Can Do Without A Car: An Open Mic Tour Of The UK With A Ukelele

uke of w That’s what Mark Wallington, The Uke Of Wallington did, walking, bussing and uke-ing his way from Brighton to Cape Wrath in the north of Scotland. Wallington does own a car, which he writes about it in his blog (a section called My Life As A Car). But if you can tour the UK with a uke and without a car, I wonder why he bothers? Maybe it’s nostalgia.
Here’s Mark’s rather wistful conclusion about owning a car….
“I encouraged the children to pass their test as soon as they could, the way I had. I told them it would give them independence. But, of course, they can’t afford to drive now. Fuel and insurance costs make it impossible.  They don’t seem bothered to be honest. Driving doesn’t have the same allure these days. Cars are associated with traffic jams and climate change rather than the open road. It makes me think I’ve lived through the golden age of motoring.”

I rather think he’s right.
