Own A Car, Get Burgled

The BBC reports today that the motor industry says it is winning the war against car thieves due to better security features. Short of loading them onto a trailer, new cars are nearly impossible to steal without the keys, which are now encoded. Over the last seven years car thefts have fallen by around two-thirds, and thefts were mostly of vehicles without encoded keys, usually cars more than three years old. But more amazing than all of this, the motor industry says 80% of thieves use the vehicle's keys and around a fifth of home burglaries are carried out in order to steal them. Which sounds like another great reason for not owning a car.
