Not owning a car is a great way to stay fit, save money, and avoid loads of hassle. This is a blog with thoughts, photos, ideas and links about carfree life: walking, active travel, public transport, places and spaces - things that matter to everyone, but even more when you don’t own a car. Photos are by me unless credited. Forthcoming: book on carfree life. Meantime, get in touch via email at carfreelifeoutsidethebox@gmail.com or Twitter @carfreebrighton

People want to walk: Brighton and Hove’s passeggiata on the prom
This was the scene on Hove seafront yesterday afternoon – a pedestrian slo-mo superhighway. How come? Is there anything we can learn from the throng on the prom?
First, a sunny day helps, even if it’s cold (it was).
Second, a great townscape, bordering the beach, is nice to have.
Third, a stroll can become a social norm - a Brighton and Hove version of the passeggiata.
Fourth, it’s a safe space for pedestrians, free from the prospect of getting mown down by a vehicle (cyclists take note!)
