Not owning a car is a great way to stay fit, save money, and avoid loads of hassle. This is a blog with thoughts, photos, ideas and links about carfree life: walking, active travel, public transport, places and spaces - things that matter to everyone, but even more when you don’t own a car. Photos are by me unless credited. Forthcoming: book on carfree life. Meantime, get in touch via email at carfreelifeoutsidethebox@gmail.com or Twitter @carfreebrighton

Taking Back the Car
Sometimes, life means doing disparate things in different places, some of which turn out not to be do-able/not convenient by public transport: so hire a car! A VW Fox on a “weekend special” three day hire from Enterprise cost us a shade under £45 including VAT, insurance and unlimited mileage. According to the AA, owning a car priced up to £12,000 (the Fox costs between £7½k and £9k, depending on the variant) would cost £2,176 a year before you drive it an inch. That’s a lot of car hire.
