Nice to see the examples of urban spaces recaptured from King Car in this report from the UK’s Department for Communities and Local Government. The report sets out some key principles for reclaiming our towns and cities, and recognises that High Streets will need to go beyond shopping if they are going to survive and prosper. The report, which also contains a useful set of links on the ‘urban realm’, should remind politicians of the need for vision when it comes to re-imagining urban life. The picture above, taken from the report and courtesy Brighton and Hove City Council, is a reminder of what’s at stake - Brighton’s New Road before and after it was turned into a shared space (shared surface?). Here’s to more of the same, not just in Brighton and Hove, but across the UK – we have a long way to go to catch up with our continental neighbours.
