Not owning a car is a great way to stay fit, save money, and avoid loads of hassle. This is a blog with thoughts, photos, ideas and links about carfree life: walking, active travel, public transport, places and spaces - things that matter to everyone, but even more when you don’t own a car. Photos are by me unless credited. Forthcoming: book on carfree life. Meantime, get in touch via email at carfreelifeoutsidethebox@gmail.com or Twitter @carfreebrighton

The 8.51 to Brighton
Buses and trains inevitably loom large for those of us who choose to be carfree. And the Brighton line has its own mythology. BBC Radio 4 invited three writers to produce short stories about the train to Brighton for this year’s Brighton Festival. Brightonians (and Hovistas) were invited to the recording, which took place last weekend. Same train, three very different stories. The stories will be broadcast in the summer, and are well worth a listen - even if you aren’t a regular on the 8.51.
